Polypropylene
Polypropylene (PP), is a semi-crystalline, thermoplastic polymer used in everything from packaging and reusable containers to textiles and automotive components, to banknotes. Polypropylene is rugged and resistant to many organic solvents, degreasing agents, bases and acids.
In addition to its excellent physical and chemical properties, polypropylene is widely used because of its ease of fabrication and ability to sustain high continuous operating temperatures. Compared to polyethylene it has a lower impact strength, but offers higher working temperature and tensile strength.
Polypropylene has a low surface energy which means that many common glues will not bond to the surface. Joining polypropylene requires specialist glues or can be done using a welding processes.
Polypropylene is available in two primary types Polypropylene Homopolymer (PP-H) and Polypropylene Copolymer (PP-C)
Polypropylene H (PP-H)
PP-H is used in engineering and tooling applications as if offers higher rigidity than the copolymer grade, PP-H has a marginally better maximum working temperature as well as better chemical stability. It is resistant to staining and has a low moisture absorption rate. Polypropylene homopolymer finds applications in vacuum systems and systems where hot liquids and gases are transported. If can be found in valves, flanges and gears.
In natural form Polypropylene H is physiologically inert and is approved for use in contact with food.
Forms: Rod and sheet, natural and beige.
PP-C (Polypropylene Copolymer)
Polypropylene copolymer is main found in more cosmetic applications, such as cladding. In particular is used for hygienic cladding and a range of other applications in the food industry.
Forms: Rod and sheet, black and beige.
