01 T00l Steel

01 tool steel is an oil hardening carbon manganese steel, 01 possesses excellent dimensional stability during heat treatment. 01 is durable, offers good wear resistance and retains a good cutting edge.

Typical applications: Press Tools, Broaches, Clipping, Marking Punches, Gauges, Jigs, Deep Drawing Dies, Slitting Cutters, Taps & Screwing Tools

We can supply 01 tool steel flats and squares cut from plate, they can be supplied to any dimensions you require.
Our 01 tool steel is available in economiser or black.

We stock 01 in hot rolled round bar, bright drawn round bar, plate, flats and squares. Delivered from stock nationwide.

Forging:

Heat slowly and start forging at 980-1000°C. 01 tool steel should not be forged below 800°C. After forging, cool slowly ideally in a furnace

Annealing:

O1 tool steel is supplied in the annealed, machineable condition. It is not necessary to re-anneal unless it has been forged or hardened by a tool maker.
To anneal, heat slowly to 740-760°C, soak well then allow to furnace cool to 500°C or below. Annealed hardness will be about 229 Brinell.

Hardening:

Heat slowly and ideally pre-heat at 300-500°C before raising to the hardening temperature of 780-820°C. Pre heating is beneficial for complex sections. Soak thoroughly allowing 30 minutes per 25mm of ruling section before quenching. Light sections should be quenched in oil from the lower end of the hardening temperature range. Tempering is always necessary after hardening.

Tempering:

Temper 01 between 100°C and 350°C. Soak well at the desired temperature and soak for at least one hour per 25mm of total thickness.
