Tool Steel Supplier

H13 tool steel is an air hardening chromium die steel – H13 is used in a range of applications. The higher vanadium content improves resistance to heat checking and provides all round improvement to mechanical properties at elevated temperatures. Tools made with H13 can be water cooled without risk of cracking.

After normal heat treatment has been carried out it is suitable for nitriding 0.30mm (0.012″) deep.

Typical applications for H13 Tool Steel :Hot forging and pressing dies, Extrusion dies, mandrels and punches, Hot chisels, Pressure pads, Extrusion stems and rams, Blanking and bending tools, Hot heading tools, Backer blocks.

We can supply H13 tool steel in round bar and flat sections which can be cut to your required size.

Forging H13 Tool Steel:

Slow preheat up to 750°C then increase temperature more rapidly to 1050-1100 °C. Do not forge below 850°C.
After forging it is essential to cool the H13 slowly, this should be done either in a furnace or in vermiculite.

Annealing:

Soak the H13 thoroughly at 840-860°C. Then furnace cool at a maximum rate of 20°C per hour down to 600°C, followed by final cooling in air.

Hardening:

Preheat to 780-820°C. Soak thoroughly, then increase rapidly to the final hardening temperature of 1000-1030°C. When the H13 has reached this temperature, soak for approximately half an hour. Cool in air. Large sections may be quenched in oil. Tools should be tempered as soon as they become hand warm..

Tempering:

Heat the H13 uniformly to the required tempering temperature, allow a soaking time of two hours per 25mm of ruling section. Remove from the furnace and allow to cool in air. A second tempering is strongly recommended All the H13 tool to cool to room temperature between tempers. The usual tempering range is 530-650°C depending on the hardness requirements and the operating temperature of the tool.
